Enjoin Dar, Bujumbura in big projects
The resolve by Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Rwanda to fast-track
joint infrastructure projects -- railways, pipelines and refineries --
will reshape the region's economic landscape.
At their last meeting in Nairobi on May 2, the presidents of the four
countries -- Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Salva Kiir (South Sudan), Yoweri
Museveni (Uganda) and Paul Kagame (Rwanda) -- set out strict new
guidelines and signed off on a clearer implementation plan for all the
projects.
The key projects are the standard gauge railway, the Uganda refinery,
the Hoima-Lokichar-Lamu crude oil pipeline, the East African tourist
visa, the Single Customs Territory and the establishment of a single
area network that will eventually reduce the cost of calling across
the region.
Based on the new deadlines, most of these projects will be up and
running by mid next year. They are expected to improve connectivity in
the region, boost cross-border trade among the three countries by
threefold and make the region more attractive to foreign direct
investments.
It is unfortunate that Tanzania and Burundi are yet to fully join up,
meaning some of these projects may be implemented in their absence,
effectively locking them out of the envisaged new infrastructure map.
It is, however, important to note that the two countries have been
sending high-ranking government officials to the Summits of the
Northern Corridor Integration Projects.
In the latest meeting, Tanzania was represented by Prime Minister
Mizengo Pinda while Burundi sent second vice president Gervais
Rufyikiri.
Joint regional infrastructure projects are the only way to make the
region competitive globally.
