[AfricaRealities.com] Fascinating story that African people living with HIV should learn from: We told the king we had HIV

For the last few years, Wangda Dorje and Tshering Choden have been the public face of HIV/Aids in Bhutan. They were among a group of five who were the first in the country to come out as HIV-positive - in front of the King, and then on national television.

Wangda Dorje and Tshering Choden have four young children. It's summer in Bhutan, and the sounds of a city under construction, come clattering in through the windows of their two-room flat in the capital, Thimphu. In the kitchen, their 12-year-old daughter is washing up, while the younger children play tag in the tiny living room. The TV is on and the flat is spotless. They seem like a model family, but their lives have been far from ordinary.

It all began in 2006 when Choden was three months pregnant with her second child. She and Dorje were on their way back from hospital, where they had just had a routine pregnancy check-up, when Dorje's phone rang. It was the hospital asking them to return urgently. Not knowing what the matter could be, they quickly made their way back. They were shown into a bare white room with a table and four chairs.

Good News in UK: School-leaver overturns immigration-related blanket ban on student loan

A school-leaver who was denied a student loan has succeeded in overturning a blanket ban – related to immigration status – on funding for higher education.

The supreme court decision could pave the way for hundreds of other young people who are settled in Britain and have been to school in this country to carry on to higher education.

The case was brought by Beaurish Tigere, 20, who arrived from Zambia with her parents at 6 and went on to attend primary and secondary schools in York.

She became head girl, obtained three A-levels and won a place at Northumbria University to read international business management. When she applied for student finance, however, she was was told that her immigration status of discretionary leave to remain meant she was not eligible for a loan.

[AfricaRealities.com] Myths and Realities: Would Calais migrants really be better off in the UK? ( BBC)

Myths and Realities: Would Calais migrants really be better off in the UK? ( BBC)
Around 3,000 migrants are camped around Calais in northern France. Many of them think life will be better in the UK than France - or many other EU countries - but are they right?
Scenes of immigrants trying to storm the Channel Tunnel, or climbing aboard lorries, show how desperate those who have fled to Europe are to get to the UK from France. On Tuesday a migrant died on a freight shuttle through the tunnel.
Many want to claim asylum in the UK. Others want to enter the country incognito to remain as illegal workers. But what do migrants say is drawing them to the UK - and is the risk of prolonging their journey really worth it?

[AfricaRealities.com] Why should everybody fear American people ?

Why should everybody fear American people ?   They are the enemies of black people.

Why Obama is teaching African leaders about human rights when he is unable to solve the problems of  racism in the US , which is resulting to shooting  Black people to death ?

Cincinnati police officer indicted in shooting death of black man
CINCINNATI BY STEVE BITTENBENDER
·
A University of Cincinnati police officer was indicted Wednesday on murder charges in the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed black motorist who was stopped because of a missing front license plate.
Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters called the July 19 death of Samuel Dubose, 43, "senseless" and "totally unwarranted."
Ray Tensing, the 25-year-old white officer who shot Dubose in the head, "wasn't dealing with someone who was wanted for murder," Deters told a news conference. "He was dealing with someone who didn't have a front license plate. This is, in the vernacular, a pretty chicken crap stop."
The incident was the latest in a series of fatal police confrontations across the United States that have raised questions about police use of force against minorities.
Tensing will be arraigned at 10 a.m. EDT on Thursday in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas and could face the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
Cincinnati officials braced for possible unrest after the announcement of the grand jury's decision and the university shut in case of protests.
A body camera video that Deters played for reporters showed Tensing stopped Dubose for a missing front license plate. Dubose failed to provide a driver's license as Tensing requested then tried to prevent Tensing, who told Dubose to take his seat belt off, from opening the car door.
The car started slowly rolling forward as Tensing reached in and yelled for him to stop. The officer then pulled his gun and fired once, killing Dubose.
Deters said Tensing was not dragged by the car, as the officer had reported, but instead he fell backwards after shooting Dubose in the head. Deters said Tensing should have let Dubose drive away as he had his license plate number already.
"I've been doing this for 30 years," Deters said after meeting with Dubose's family. "This is the most asinine act I've ever seen a police officer make, totally unwarranted."
Tensing "should never have been a police officer," he said without elaborating.
Audrey Dubose, the victim's mother, praised the indictment.
"I'm so thankful that everything was uncovered," she told reporters. "I thought it was going to be covered up."

Re: [AfricaRealities.com] Why are Migrants fighting to death to reach UK from Calais?

The PM David Cameron believes that all these revenue options ( drugs, prostitution, money laundering, corruption, property grab by rich foreigners) and lowest paying jobs are important to the  country because they  contributes to  increasing UK GDP and decreasing UK unemployment rates.

David Cameron has vowed to throw more illegal migrants out of Britain as a deterrent, blaming the Calais crisis on "a swarm of people" trying to escape north Africa in an attempt to come to the UK.
The prime minister's phrasing has been criticised by the Refugee Council as more migrants continued their attempts to reach Britain from Calais via the Channel tunnel over Wednesday night and into the early hours of Thursday morning, a day after a man was crushed to death under a truck.
Speaking to ITV News in Vietnam, Cameron vowed to do more to protect Britain's borders. That means trying to stabilise the countries from which they come, it also means breaking the link between travelling and getting the right to stay inEurope.

Calais crisis: Cameron condemned for 'dehumanising' description of migrants

Rights groups have rounded on David Cameron, saying his description of migrants in Calais as a "swarm of people" trying to reach Britain was dehumanising.
The prime minister's words brought into focus the emotive language used by politicians and the media about the migrants in makeshift camps in the French port town.
Speaking during a visit to Vietnam, Cameron told ITV News attempts to enter the UK had increased because "you have got a swarm of people coming across the Mediterranean, seeking a better life, wanting to come to Britain because Britain has got jobs, it's got a growing economy, it's an incredible place to live".
He added: "But we need to protect our borders by working hand in glove with our neighbours, the French, and that is exactly what we are doing."
A British official later denied Cameron's words had dehumanised the migrants.
The Refugee Council was first to condemn Cameron's language.

[AfricaRealities.com] Obama: Investing in minority men is not charity, its lucrative

Obama: Investing in minority men is not 'charity,' it's lucrative

Liz Goodwin
Senior National Affairs Reporter
Obama: Investing in minority men is not 'charity,' it's lucrative

If you can't appeal to their hearts, appeal to their pocketbooks.
That's what the president and his administration are doing to sell his My Brother's Keeper initiative, which seeks to help minority boys and young men succeed at school and in the workforce.
In May, the president said the business and nonprofit leaders who support My Brother's Keeper are "not doing this out of charity" or to assuage societal guilt.
"They're doing this because they know that making sure all of our young people have the opportunity to succeed is an economic imperative," Obama said.
Now the White House has released a report highlighting the potential economic gains the country would sustain if persistent educational gaps between boys of color and white boys were closed, one of the key goals of My Brother's Keeper. Minority men would earn $170 billion more each year, the total U.S. gross domestic product would spike by 1.8 percent and all American workers would see a 3.6 percent raise, the White House predicts. The more productive workers on the job, the more the economy will grow, the report argues, and investing in education for minority boys would be a fast way to get there.
The alternative is to allow more and more young men of color to continue to drop out of the labor force, adding to a long list of what the New York Times has called "Missing Black Men."
"For every [minority man] who was born 25 years ago, only half of them are employed today," said Betsey Stevenson, a member of the president's Council of Economic Advisers who helped write the report. "That means there are half of them we have lost — that's a lot of talent we are losing. When you think about it that way, it becomes obvious the toll it's taken on our nation."
The boys are lost to jail, early death and high unemployment, all societal problems My Brother's Keeper hopes to urge private businesses and local governments to tackle. Though the president's initiative has attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in pledges, the daunting goal of closing education and achievement gaps would take significantly more investment to solve.
The president started My Brother's Keeper last year, in part prompted by the death of teen Trayvon Martin, who was shot by a neighborhood watchman in an Orlando suburb. Obama was unusually vocal about Martin's death, arguing that stereotypes about minority boys and men being dangerous make them more likely to face violence themselves. "Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago," Obama told the press two years ago, recalling how he would hear car doors locking as he walked down the streets. "We need to spend some time in thinking about how do we bolster and reinforce our African-American boys."
The president will make the goals of My Brother's Keeper a major part of his post-presidency. ("This will remain a mission for me and for Michelle not just for the rest of my presidency but for the rest of my life," he said in May.) Private-sector leaders have formed an independent nonprofit, called the MBK Alliance, that will continue the work long after Obama leaves office.
The initiative comes at a time when police shootings of young black men have roiled race relations across the country and reignited a debate about how the criminal justice system treats people of color. Activists have started a movement that asserts "Black lives matter" — and have pressured presidential candidates to weigh in on the issue. Meanwhile, a recent poll found that most Americans believe race relations in the country are bad — a steep increase from 2009, right after Obama took office.
Broderick Johnson, cabinet secretary and chair of the My Brother's Keeper Task Force, says the White House has been pleased by how the initiative has drawn bipartisan support. Cities run by white Republican mayors, such as Indianapolis, have embraced the call and pledged to help young minority men succeed.
"My Brother's Keeper was not designed to be a panacea on race relations by any means, but there's no question that it's having an impact on getting people across the country to see the importance of investing in boys and young men of color, whether for economic reasons or moral considerations," Johnson said. "What the president is very clear about in the wake of Trayvon Martin and other things that have happened in communities across the country is that we can't leave folks behind in this society and we have to invest in them."
My Brother's Keeper urges the hundreds of communities that have signed on to the program to make specific action plans. It recommends mentorship programs, expanding access to preschool, which shows lifelong benefits in later employment, and also reducing the use of suspensions and expulsions in kindergarten and elementary school, which are disproportionately doled out to boys of color.
The program has come under fire for its focus on men to the exclusion of women. More than 1,000 women of color, including civil rights leader Anita Hill, signed a letter last year urging the president to include girls in the program. "We simply cannot agree that the effects of these conditions on women and girls should pale to the point of invisibility, and are of such little significance that they warrant zero attention in the messaging, research and resourcing of this unprecedented Initiative," the women wrote.
"We don't leave them out — I think that stems from a bit of a misunderstanding," Johnson said of girls and young women. He said that helping boys and young men of color helps girls too, because they face many of the same disparities.
"Nevertheless, the emphasis on boys and young men of color is quite deliberate because that's where I think the most startling and glaring gaps are," he added.
